Rules & Guidelines

:bulletred: :bulletred: To participate in this contest you must be a member of *painters. If you are not, don't stress, you can apply for the club, and even if we don't add you inmediately, if we have your "Join" note, that's enough.

:bulletred: :bulletred: Your entry must be a traditional painting. Allowed mediums include watercolors, oils, acrylics, inks, and some other typer of liquid or semiliquid painting mediums. For this time, and this contest only, we will also allow the inclusion of foreign objects, that stand for the recycle/reuse theme. This meaning: You can submit as entry: a painting made just from paint (as normally we submit into the club), or paint over a reused object (see this as example: [link] ) or use recycled elements as a part of the painting (see Berni’s work as example: [link] ). In any case this has to be done by hand, digital collages won’t be accepted. Please take in consideration that the works must be overall a painting, so please keep a measured inclusion of things, so it’s not simply a collage. Painting must be the predominant medium of the work. If you have doubts, please consult the club by note.

:bulletred: :bulletred: Every member can only submit 1 entry to this contest. Your entry must be a scan or a photograph of your traditional work, of at least 700 pixels of width. Take in consideration that a good photograph will help your entry show better, and try avoiding the flares (there’s a good tutorial to do it here: [link] ). You must upload your entry into your deviantart gallery and add in the description the fact that is a submission for this contest.

:bulletred: :bulletred: You must submit to the club the link to your entry in a Note under the subject “Bring Out the Trash”. In it, you must include the size, a description of the mediums you used, and an statement from you about the topic. Notes with entries that don’t follow this guidelines could be ignored since they could be moved directly to the club’s regular submissions queue list, so please write correctly the subject of the note.

Deadline

:bulletgreen: :bulletgreen: You have 2 months to submit your entry. This means submissions will be closed by April 17th, 2008. Winners will be announced between the 2 weeks of the closure. Extended til May 31st!!

The Entries

I used airbrushing and bodypaint for this work. The wall is approximatelly 2 meters tall; the paiting is also about 2m wide.

The concept: Littering is global is the basic idea. The majority of people don't consider it of such importance; not compared to global warming, and all the issues surrounding it. But we are the one who created gW problems. yet we fail to realize/admit it. While graffiti is considered a violation of law, littering is just what people do. Ultimately this hypocrasy is what I tried to show.

- A.K.

Five things from the highway. Gouache, items are actual size & the composition is about 2.5" x 3".

Recycling begins with realizing the value of the everyday items we throw out. That is what my miniatures are often about: appreciating the overlooked things that are typically disregarded and wasted even though they can actually be very beautiful.

"Green : Red": It is a diptych of 2 small canvases painted with acrylics, each approx. 24x15 cm -> all in all, the diptych measure approx. 24x30 cm
2 separate scans of the canvases were used.

I have written a rather lengthy political "statement" in the artist's description:
As the theme of the contest is political, I had to relate the painting(s) to the issue of "Renewable/Reusable/Recyclable." The way I approached this was to juxtapose the two different canvases, where the green one symbolizes the natural world, and the black one symbolizes the city, or urban world. The clashing between these two worlds, more specifically the domination of the urban world, is a critical issue in the whole environment/trash-related political discussion. People congregate in cities, building, polluting, and in effect covering up the natural world with man-made structures and pollutants. I represented this in the painting by including traces of the yellow/blue/green colours, which represent the natural world, in the black canvas; it's hard to recognize the natural beauty behind the buildings, smog, etc. of the cities. The intricate and complex texturing of the black canvas contrasts to the simple, flowing texture of the green one; this symbolizes the added density of people in cities, the increased number of lives that must run parallel yet often separately from each other.

Enjoy :)

A little help from a everyone by not throwing their various plastics and metals to the trash by recycling and reusing them will help this planet. Help. Recycle. do your share pick what you think is not trash out of the trash.

"Meditation Falls" 40 X 40 Acryclic on canvas.

The canvas was an old painter's dropcloth, the backing was a window frame, I added texture with coffee grounds and soil. The rest is an abstracted landscape done in acrylic.

Old CD
Oil Paint
Krylon Spray Gesso
1.5 hours

Cds/DVDs/ Computer games are all fun items. But what do you do with them when you are done? You throw them out if they don't work or you can give them away if they still work.
When you throw them out you are filling up the landfills. Landfills take over natural habitats, eventually killing the animals that live there. But what can you do to stop filling the landfills?
YOU CAN REUSE THEM!!!
Gesso the CD and paint on it. Some examples are [link] and [link] If you don't have the painting skill you can cut them up and make some neat abstract or tangram art. Some examples are [link] and [link] and [link] You can even make some neat clocks! Here is a example, [link] If you don't have the artistic ability you can give the CD(s) to someone who will make some neat art out of them.
If you are giving it away and you have some private data on it, you can run a magnet over it or you can scratch it. If you are going to scratch it make sure the person getting it doesn't care if it is being scratched (if they are making a tangram they will most likely want the shiny side to be nice).
I hope you have found some new ways to dispose of your old CDs and help save the environment and natural habitats. Please think twice before throwing that old CD out in the garbage!

'Shelter' is my submission for the 'bring out the trash' contest. Reduce Reuse Recycle:D I used an old curtain to give her 'shelter'.

Totally inspired by the beautiful picture of [link]

This painting 28" x 20" Oil on Canvas with Hemp attachment.

My painting began with the idea of the "cycle". I wanted the piece to convey a peaceful cyclical movement to embody the natural, self-sustaining order or the natural world. The circular shapes, particularly white circles and the large silver semi-circle represent the elements by which the earth draws sustenance for the power of renewal. The white circles floating over the gold and blue backgrounds simultaneously echo both the elements of air and water. The overriding gold overtones of the piece remind the viewer of the sun while the figure representing the sun, the silver half-disc, is dark, reminiscent of the setting sun because the days themselves are a cycle, with both day and night being necessary for the sustainability of life. Overlapping all these primary elements are the large swirling organics representative of the natural plant life on earth. They, too, have a cyclical movement mimicking the patterns already set down by the natural order. However, their organic nature is representative of life, growth, and the untamed nature of a world untouched by man. The third level of elements represent both the positive and negative actions that man has on the environment. The two dark rectangular shapes are stark and impede upon the natural space and do not share the cyclical nature of the rest of the piece. These geometric elements are man encroaching upon the world and imposing a new, unsustainable order upon a previously harmonious system. However, on the left hand side of the painting, the hemp/bead work represents man choosing to co-exist with the natural world. Man's creativity and ingenuity melds with the organic, symbolizing our ability to exist and create order with respect to our natural world. Ultimately, it is through mankind adopting this mindset of BECOMING an element in the natural world rather than imposing upon the natural world that we enter into the cyclical nature of earth's renewability.

3x4', oil paint.

My home province is Alberta, Canada. Alberta contains nearly all of Canada's oil wealth, the second largest proven oil reserve on earth. By 2010 Alberta is forecast to be the world's largest source of new crude oil. The largest producer of coal in Canada and home to vast forests, Alberta's is an economy fundamentally based on the export of natural resources. I have grown up in an era of overwhelming economic prosperity here, to the detriment of the environment which I have witnessed first hand. Issues of environmental stewardship and sustainability have been ignored to feed further unchecked growth, unchecked consumption and unchecked greed.

I have seen the earth laid open for miles in the strip mines and mountainsides razed after a clear cut. I have seen convoy after convoy of semi trailers hauling impossibly large machinery North to the oil sands. From my studio, I can see the Strathcona Refineries which refine 187 000 barrels of crude oil a day. This land is not renewable, reusable, recyclable, it is never the same after these practices.

I have always been interested in how we define ourselves as people through our relationship to the land, and how the land ends up defining us. Much of my past and current work deals with these issues and they continue to be of great personal importance to me. Our attitudes, our priorities towards this land must change, because we as people are not the same without it.

2006j - Peace Symbol 88 x 34 cm
3 acrylic paintings with a mixed technique (recycling) background

There are two levels of trash in this work :
- the recycled materials (electronic components and stones) around the paintings.
- the trashy situation depicted... that does not need any further comments, I hope.

My thoughts, which I tried to bring out in this painting, are that we must try to lead more balanced lifestyles, being respectful of the environment so that we don't overwhelm our resources and the natural balance of the ecosystem. I believe that as we advance as a species, we will find more and better ways to reverse the damage we have done, but only if we realize that we must respect nature.

Acrylic on canvas, 6X8".

24" x 36"
Ink on Mylar

My works on mylar are all from recycled sheets found from dumpster diving in my local state civil engineering parking lot. I think dumpstering for goods is both resourceful and beneficial to society. People throw away such AMAZING things. It is sincerely the worst thing that some people do to directly hurt our Gaia.

For all you future dumpster divers, BE SAFE about it.

There's also alot of things that could hurt you in a dumpster so be aware of your surroundings at all times.

This is a watercolor painting I did based on an old photo that my sister took of me once when I was wearing some of my grandma's old dress that was to be thrown away. I chose to use the usage of second hand clothes as a form of recycling.

Size: 19x26 cm

I used a mechanical pencil for a sketch, then watercolors for most of the painting and a few warkers on the wall hanging and on the outline of the recycling emblem.

Acrylic on A4 sized paper

This is a painting I had already created before I heard about the competition (I only heard about the comp and joined the club today, so I haven't had time to create something new). I wasn't sure if we had to create something brand new or not (I painted this a few weeks ago), so I'm letting you know now so you don't think I'm trying to break rules - if old works aren't allowed, then I understand if this submission is not accepted.

To create this, I took some junk mail (a Big W catalogue) and recycled it by tearing into little pieces, soaking in water mixed with blue paint, and then using them to make the background of this work. When that dried I added some more blue paint, let it dry and then added the tree. I was hoping to convey just what we are trying to preserve by recycling.

I think recycling is very important. It's an easy first step towards solving our many environmental issues. We can't fix it all in one quick step. It's going to take a while. Everything has a beginning and saving the planet is no different.
9x11"
Acrylic

40 x60 cm acrylic an canvas
This painting was inspired by a photo of my sister.
It shows our alienation from the nature , which is caused by econamically developments and our changed social expectations. The statement behind it is that we should think about the consequences of or acting as we do not do it know
As we pollute our environment we change our world in a negative way .
In connection with the contest title „ bring out the trash „ the question I had asked myself was if it is possible to make the changes we have caused unhappen and if it could be neccesary to create a humanfree world (bring out the trash) to make this possible.

Size: 1275 x 1754
Medium: watercolors on aquaell paper
Few words from me: Most what I want to say is in description of the work. Generaly - when we don't recycle, when we don't have ecologic point of view - one day it will be to late to do anything... We will have big trouble!

18"x24" Oil Paint
Recycle everyday plastic bottles and containers by placing them into the designated blue bins. :)

Acrylic on canvas, 12" x 16".

My major goal with this painting was to say something relating to "Reduce/Reuse/Recycle" in a different way... no recycle bins or any of that. Since I usually paint a lot of cars in [urban] environments, I thought I'd stick with that as a basis.

We can't expect miracles from a society so entranced with energy and technology consumption. The first big step we can take is to Reduce. We're still going to be using cars to get from here to there, like it or not. But why not buzz around in a hybrid car, like this Honda Civic hybrid? Instead of going far away for a little escape, do a little research to find nearby parks and nature reserves to explore. They're very beautiful, often free of charge, and VERY eco-friendly! (Trees are a nice break from computer screens, too.)

Size: 10 x 7.5"
Medium: Watercolour (Caran d'Ache Aquarelle)
Statement: My Bring out the Trash contest submission, "The Conversation," depicts the importance of communication in order to encourage the renewability and sustainability of our planet when the darkness of the environment is crowding in on us.

Size: Done on a slightly smaller than A4 bit of cardboard

Tools: I used these awesome acrylic paints, seriously best ones i have ever used. So smooth and easy to use. Not at all liquidy like these crappy ones i got D8

Time: Couple of hours. Did it in about 5 layers i think. Thank god the paint dried fast 8D

Um. This idea just came to me really. The main point being that the world should love recycling the way they love rainbows c: Recycling can make the world a beautiful place, just like rainbows do ;D Although i'm not the best painter in the world, it's the ideas of the paintings that truly matter. Feeling. That's what art is about 8D

Size: 36cm x 22cm
Medium: acrylics on heavy structured acrylic painting cardboard
Date: May 2008

Statement: My entry is a homage to the shipbreakers in Bangladesh. The inspiration for this painting came from =alexiuss journal entry "Hell on earth (Visual installment 01)" from April 19, 2008. It is both shocking and fascinating how these people live and work and break up gigantic ship wrecks lying on the beach to bring every piece of metal back to some use. These shipbreakers are recycling workers in the hardest and most visual way I can imagine. The idea for this painting grew slowly after having seen =alexiuss visual installment and after having learned about this contest. However, since I am most happy when I can paint fairies, unicorns, songgryphons, or dragons, I twisted the theme of the shipbreakers a bit.

Medium - Acrylic paints and bits of random celephane. I just stuck it on with the paint and painted over it. There is also the edge of the paper cut off from the ring binder stuck on.
size - a4
Description. - I recycled my own works and wanted to show how packaging could be art. The references which i used were some of my old works, a coca cola bottle filled with rusty nails etc which had been put in my garden and the background a can of rusty nails. I wanted to show that even the most useless things are still beautiful. I added the brand in for a, trueness to the reference and to show that maybe large companies should start creating art with there unrecyclable waste. I aimed to have no waste in theis picture, when i had too much paint i just applied it to stick on bits of plastic. I even thought about submitting my pallette alongst side it. This really was the process of painting not the final product itself.

Bottled Pot
Bottle is reused for planting plant...
(in fact, i'm doing that, onion, celery, etc, planted in a bottle at my home, beside reusing bottle, i actually planting something, and that's also a nice beautiful view ^^)
~Please reduce buying bottle,
and if possible reuse it...~
A5, Watercolor on Watercolor Paper

Crag I & II
Mixed media on panel
each are 30 x 90 x 5 cm

in these paintings, i recycled some hardboard and wood which i found in a skip (dumpster) and i have also used other recycable materials in my work... my work has much to do with an awareness of the environment and man's impact on it...

but where there's muck there's also brass...
